"Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 'Honor your father and mother'--which is the first commandment with a promise--'that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on earth.'"
Wow, so many things here again! Obey in the Lord...not obey stuff your parents ask you to do that isn't Godly. There are parents out there that ask that of their children! ICK! The first commandment with a promise (and it is specifically pointed out) seems to imply an extra special importance here. Not obey them because they are Godly, or perfect or deserve it....obey them because that is what God says...and then He promises that it will go well with you (not be perfect) and so that you may enjoy long life (that doesn't mean to me that you will live a LONG time, but that you will ENJOY your life). When you live in strife or turmoil, especially with your family, it tears at you on a regular basis and can prevent you from truly enjoying life to the fullest as God intended for you.
I think I kinda stuck my observations and applications together! I don't live at home with my parents anymore but it still is important for me to obey them and respect them and love them.
Father, you are the best example of parenting out there! As a Mom I need to strive to be the parent you are showing me I can be! I need to be strong enough to use tough love and sensitive enough to just love! I need to be the parent whose children respect her and not cause strife or turmoil in their lives for no good reason. Thank you for the wonderful example you give us on parenting!
Amen
